Never Pay to File FAFSA

The first F in “FAFSA” stands for Free, and that’s how it should be. Don’t be tempted to pay someone to file your FAFSA for you. Not only will you be giving them all your personal tax and financial information, but you’re also paying unnecessary fees.

If someone claims they can fill out your FAFSA so you qualify for more Federal grants, beware. This is a red flag that they may be filing fraudulently – making up information under your name and social security number. Their tactics could end up costing you more than any extra aid you think you’ll get.

The information provided on the FAFSA is verified with the IRS. If the numbers don’t add up you’ll find yourself with a tax bill and you’ll be asked to repay any grants or loans you were given. You may even be charged penalties for fraudulent filing.

The submission and support of the FAFSA are free. Go to www.fafsa.gov to fill out the FAFSA online and you can also contact the Office of Federal Student Aid at 1-800-4-FED-AID.
